Obituary for Roger H. Backus

Roger H. Backus, 81

EAST LIVERPOOL – Roger H. Backus, of Glenmoor, went home to be with his Lord Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at the East Liverpool City Hospital. He was 81.

Born in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, October 20, 1938, he was a son of the late Virgil L. and Effie T. McCullough Backus. A resident of this area most of his life, he worked at the former Crucible Steel Company and later retired from WCI Steel in Warren. A graduate of East Liverpool High School, he was a member of Oak Grove Church of Christ in Industry, Pennsylvania. Roger was a fan of football and basketball and loved dogs, especially helping his daughter Patty train Collies.

He is survived by his two beloved daughters, Patty Stafford of Hubbard and Andrea Backus of East Palestine, as well as five grandchildren, Zachary Stafford, Nicolas Stafford, Kayla McCreary, Travis McCreary and Preston Flowers, and three great-grandchildren, Damien, Lucas and Elijah.

Also surviving is a brother, Richard D. Backus and his wife, Sondra, of Surfside Beach, South Carolina, along with a sister-in-law, Alice Backus of Chester. He will also be remembered by many nieces and nephews, especially his niece Denise Backus whom he was very close to. His best friend, Michael Hunt survives as well.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Janet Masters and Kathleen Pickens, and three brothers, Virgil Backus, Jr., Edgar Backus and Ronald Backus.

Evangelist Jeff Phillis will conduct a funeral service at 7:00 p.m. Saturday at the Dawson Funeral Home. Friends may visit two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Yellow Creek Cemetery.

The family would like to thank St. Elizabeth Hospital and East Liverpool City Hospital, especially Dr. Ramy Fahim, for their outstanding care.
