Obituary for Ruth E. Whittington (McElhaney)

SEBRING, OHIO – Ruth E. Whittington, 103, of Salem passed away Sunday, May 29, 2022 at the Copeland Oaks in Sebring, Ohio.

Ruth was born in Shippingport, PA on May 19, 1919 a daughter of the late Lester and Rosie Belle (Green) McElhaney. She retired from Homer Laughlin China Company where she worked as a ware houseman. Ruth also worked as a welder during the war. She was a member of Boyce United Methodist Church. Ruth enjoyed life, waterskiing into her 80’s and going skydiving on her 85th birthday.

Preceding Ruth in death were her husband Leonard Whittington; two sons Donald and Robert Lee Whittington; four sisters Wanda Mae McElhaney, Velma McElhaney, Mary Lou Whittington and Dorothy McElhaney and eight brothers Delmar, Dale, Ray, James, Richard, Floyd, John “Pickles” and Ross McElhaney.

Left to cherish her memory are her son Richard L. Whittington and his wife Deborah of Salem; two grandchildren Jason Whittington of Elkton, MD and Lalena Klingman and her husband Jeffrey of Rocky River, OH; five great grandchildren Leonard Whittington, Hannah Whittington, Collin Whittington, Elliott Klingman and Zachary Klingman and sister Cora Belle Wilkes.

Friends may visit Wednesday at the Dawson Funeral Home where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Rev. Alvin Talkington will conduct a funeral service Thursday 12 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial at Columbiana County Memorial Park.

Immediately following the service the family will gather at the Dawson Family Center for a time of fellowship.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Copeland Oaks and Hospice of the Valley – Mahoning County for the exceptional care they provided to Ruth.
