Obituary for Steve Dawson

East Liverpool, Ohio- Stephen Allen “Bubs” Dawson, 65, of Lisbon Street passed away suddenly at his residence on Tuesday, December 20, 2022.

Born in East Liverpool, Ohio on December 21, 1956, he was a son of the late Allen Fisher and Thelma Jean Tice Dawson.

A lifetime area resident, Steve was a graduate of Beaver Local High School Class of 1975. He was most recently employed by the East Liverpool Public School System as a Paraprofessional. Most of Steve’s adult life was spent working within the sporting goods industry. He began working for the Salem Sportswear Store in Salem, Ohio, then he managed the Athlete’s Choice Sports Store in Oakmont Plaza, and then owned and operated the TJD Sports Store in East Liverpool from 1996 to 2015. He opened the TJD store as a tribute to his mother who always wanted him to have his own store.

Steve was very active in area softball, coaching and running the local Merchants team for several years then he coached Bubs 44 Softball. He was the head coach of the East Liverpool High School baseball team from 2006 to 2013. Steve then started the Bubs 44 traveling baseball team.
He was a basketball official for 44 years and served 10 years as an assigner. He was the official score keeper for East Liverpool Basketball for many years. Steve was the “Little Potters” organizer for the last 5 years. Steve coached youth league baseball at the Complex from 1997 to 2007. He truly dedicated his life to the youth of this area, striving to give them a better opportunity for a brighter future.

Survivors include his two daughters, Stacey L. Oates and her husband, Jean of East Liverpool and Samantha J. Dawson and her fiancé, Matt Howard of East Liverpool. He leaves behind five grandchildren, Dontae, Maria, Javan, Jacob and Maleigh.

In addition, Steve is survived by three sisters, Kimberly DiLoreto and her husband, Mike of Calcutta, Debbie Riggs and her husband, Terry of East Liverpool and Amy Graft and her husband, Troy of Calcutta; and three brothers, Daniel Dawson and his wife, Lisa of Calcutta, David Dawson of Calcutta and Douglas Dawson of Knoxville, Tennessee; his step-mother Donna Curran Dawson; and two step-brothers, Mike Curran and Craig Curran and his wife, Robin.

Steve also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews. Also Brock and Blake Grafton of East Liverpool, and too many friends to count.

He will be missed by all who knew him for his sense of humor, his jokes, his smile and his genuine kindness. Most of all, his daughters will miss his love and dedication that was unwavering.

Friends may visit the family on Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Dawson Funeral Home in East Liverpool, Ohio. Pastor Larry Rose of the Northside Church will officiate a private family funeral service at 10:00 am Saturday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.
