Obituary for Vicki Heidel
VICKI JOY HEIDEL, 76
EAST LIVERPOOL – Vicki Joy Heidel, of East Liverpool, passed away Thursday, November 26, 2020 at the Orchards of East Liverpool following a lengthy illness. She was 76.
Born at East Liverpool City Hospital on August 15, 1944, she was the only child of the late Emil and Della Karn Heidel.
A 1962 graduate of East Liverpool High School, she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology from Kent State University in 1967 and completed her senior year internship in Med Tech at Akron General Hospital. In 1971, she earned a Masters of the Arts in Sociology, also from Kent State.
Her early professional life involved student development at several colleges and universities, including Kent State in Kent, Ohio; University of Illinois in Champagne, Urbana; Temple University in Philadelphia, PA; and Hofstra University on Long Island, NY.
Vicki later worked as a grant writer for Columbiana County jobs development program, then worked in the development of the first twelve years of the former Waste Technology Industries facility in East End. She retired working in Administration at Nentwick Convalescent Home in East Liverpool.
She was committed to the philosophy demonstrated by years of volunteerism with the Democratic Party, having served as a Presidential Convention delegate for Ted Kennedy in 1980 and John Glenn in 1984, as well as managing their campaigns on a local level. For over eight years, Vicki was then-Governor Dick Celeste’s campaign coordinator for Columbiana County and served as party chairlady; she was also elected as precinct committee representative to the party in Columbiana County. Vicki also served in every elected position within the East Liverpool Area Democratic Club.
Active in civic matters, Vicki was involved in the East Liverpool Area Chamber of Commerce, where she served on the Board of Trustees and was co-social chairman. As a youth, she had been a member of the Masonic organization, Job’s Daughters. Vicki was a lifelong member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and had served on its Board of Trustees as well. She was famous for her (over 60) years of attachment to Geneva-on-the-Lake.
Vicki lived an extremely hearty life until her later years when she was stricken with Parkinson’s and atrial fibrillation. She is survived by an aunt and uncle, Chuck and Mary Lou (Bloor) Heidel of Charlotte, NC, and numerous cousins who are scattered across the country, including Scott Thornberry and his wife, Nanci, of East Liverpool.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital or Trinity Presbyterian Church.
The Dawson Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements, which were private. Vicki will be laid to rest near her parents at Columbiana County Memorial Park.
