Obituary for Kyle Smith

Kyle Smith, 35

Kyle passed at home on Saturday, June 11, 2022.

Kyle was born on October 20, 1986 in Pittsburgh, Pa., the son of Barb Santini and Wes Smith.

Kyle was a 2006 graduate of Salem High School, where he was a proud supporter of the basketball and football teams. He attended school through the county program, which included both Columbiana and Salem School Districts. While in school, he made some of his most cherished friends, whom he loved, talked about, and remembered for years to come.

Kyle went on to continue his education through the Transition Program run through the Columbiana County ESC and then started work at Employment Development, Inc. He attended and had quite the “fan club” at both EDI South and EDI Central. Most recently, he was employed at EDI Central, where he enjoyed beating his previous day’s record in parts assembly, greeting the employees and getting the latest gossip while taking attendance, socializing with his friends, and being everyone’s favorite mailman.

Kyle enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family. He loved fishing, playing Uno, riding his wheelchair accessible Polaris Ranger, and watching one of his many favorite TV shows.
Kyle loved Halloween, and always looked forward to the creation of each year’s costume, designed to include his wheelchair. He was an avid sports fan; he loved NASCAR, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and enjoyed going to races and games with his family. He continued to follow the Salem football team throughout the course of his life, listening to games every Friday night all season long.

Kyle was a member of the Columbiana County Special Olympics bowling and track teams, where he earned dozens of silver and gold medals at the local and state track meets. He loved a good competition, always wanted to win, and sure loved it when he did. He had his own cheering section at every meet; he loved his coaches and his teammates. His biggest and best fan was his coach, Doug Berdine.

To know Kyle was to love him. His laugh, his sense of humor, his smile, were all contagious. He was a light in every room he wheeled into. He showed us all what it is to be strong, because strength is not only found in being the biggest, the toughest, or the fastest; strength is found in one who keeps on going, keeps on trying, day after day, long after others give up. Strength is found in one who knows success isn’t always big and flashy, but knows that sometimes the greatest success is found in the tiniest of victories. In this way, he was everybody’s hero.

Kyle is survived by his mom, Barb Santini; his dad, Wes (Jennifer) Smith; his sister, Samantha Smith (and Bonino); his half-brothers, Jacob, Joshua, and Zachary Smith; his paternal grandmother, Maybelle Strabley; cousin, Savanna Boals, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A private service for the family will be held at Dawson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Kyle’s name to Employment Development, Inc. at 8330 County Home Road, Lisbon, OH 44432 or Salem High School Alumni Association, 330 East Street Salem, OH 44460.
