Obituary for William L. Bickle

POLAND, OHIO – William “Bill” L. Bickle, 81, of East Liverpool passed away Thursday, October 15, 2020 at The Hospice House.

Bill, born in East Liverpool on April 26, 1939, was a son of the late Herbert H. and Katie (Laughlin) Bickle. A member of the Class of 1957 of East Liverpool High School, Bill was an active member of the East Liverpool Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses where he faithfully served as an elder for many years. He co-owned and operated Pioneer Pottery, side-by-side with his wife, Arlene, and oldest daughter Kathy from 1975 until 2009. Prior to that, he worked for the Columbiana County Highway Department. Bill had a great love of traveling by both motorhome and motorcycle. He and Arlene spent months at a time crossing the country, enjoying the journey as much as the destination. He was well known for his skill and ability to repair vintage British cars and VWs. Upon retirement, he was able to devote time to his love of model trains which he used to race at the local YMCA when he was a boy. He also had the time recently to pursue a long-time interest in woodworking.

Bill was willing to help and to quietly serve others in whatever way he could. He especially enjoyed welcoming and serving others during congregation gatherings and building projects in whatever capacity was needed. After reading about a family with a child with an undiagnosed illness in the local paper, Bill called his daughter Debbie, who works at Columbus Children’s Hospital, to find out if there was any way the child could be seen by the doctors at Children’s to at least determine a diagnosis and possible medical treatment there. His generosity and caring nature will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathy Wooster; brothers, James Bickle and Harry Bickle and sisters, Shirley Pease and Margaret Bowersock.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 59 years, Arlene (Howell) Bickle, whom he married on June 17, 1961; daughter, Debbie Boggs of Delaware, OH; granddaughter, Abigail Wooster of East Liverpool and brother, Robert Bickle of Bradenton, FL.

A virtual memorial service will be conducted by Matthew Grossman on Saturday, October 24, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. If you would like to attend this Zoom memorial, the ID # is 849 3730 8885. The password is 114829. Arrangements entrusted to the Dawson Funeral Home.
