Obituary for Bill Merritt

East Liverpool, Ohio- William Wincel Merritt, 85, of Ohio Avenue passed away Monday, January 24th, 2022 at 1:38 a.m. at the Truman House in New Philadelphia, Ohio following a lengthy illness.

Born October 23, 1936 in Stiltner, West Virginia, he was a son of the late Ernest and Pansy White Merritt.

He spent most of his lifetime in this area retiring from the Weir- Cove Trucking Company in Weirton, West Virginia. He drove truck for over 50 years.

A veteran of the United States Army, he belonged to the Teamsters Local #697 and was an avid fisherman. He loved to watch his great-grandchildren’s sporting events.

Preceded in death by his wife, Nila Jane Dozier Merritt, whom he married August 8th, 1963, he is survived by one daughter, Tammie Lynn Wolfe and her husband, James of East Liverpool, Ohio; and two sons, Arthur Lee Meritt of Columbiana, Ohio and James Scott Meritt of East Liverpool, Ohio.

There are three grandchildren, Samantha Leigh Starkey and her husband, Andrew, Raelynn Sue Meritt and Lani Ann Wolfe; and three great-grandchildren, Collin Ring, Aaden Ring and AJ Starkey.

In addition, he leaves behind four sisters, Nancy Plum, Verna Merritt, Mattie Gotey and Bonnie Baughman; and one brother, James Merritt.

Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Enock Merritt, Jake Merritt, Donald Merritt and Homer Merritt.

Friends may visit the family on Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Dawson Funeral Home in East Liverpool, Ohio.

Burial will be in Columbiana County Memorial Park.
