Obituary for Bill Smith

William C. “Bill” Smith, 79

COLUMBUS, OH – William C. “Bill” Smith, of Columbus, formerly of Calcutta, passed away Saturday, January 14, 2023, at Hospice of Central Ohio, OSU Wexner Medical Center. He was 79.

Born in Negley, Ohio, February 23, 1943, he was a son of the late William R. Smith, Sr. and Mary Watson Daniels. He was raised on the family farm, located on Smith Road, Negley, by his grandparents, Eddie R. and Mary O. Smith, and graduated from Beaver Local High School in 1961. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam where he held the rank of Sergeant. A Calcutta resident most of his life, he was an International semi-truck driver for many years as an owner/operator. Spending time on the farm, teaching the kids how to ride dirt bikes, and eating Five Guys cheeseburgers with his family were some of his favorite pastimes.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: a son, Steve C. Smith and his wife, Kori, of St. Augustine, Florida, and a daughter, Amy R. Newsome and her husband, Ryan, of Columbus, as well as four grandchildren: Tyler (fiancé Kelly) Smith, Kyle (Nicole) Smith, Liza Price, and Savanna Jackson, and three great-grandchildren: Ayana, Anthony, and Ayden Williams, a sister Roberta Huston of Calcutta, former wife Scherry (Dunn) Smith, and family friend Gerald Wiseman. He was preceded in death by a sister, Charma Larkins of Newell, West Virginia.

Pastor Mark Blakeley will conduct a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 23, at the Dawson Funeral Home where friends may visit two hours prior to the service. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery where the Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will conduct military honors.

Following the service, friends and family will gather at the Dawson Family Center for fellowship.
