James E. Nulph, 80
CALCUTTA – James E. Nulph, of Calcutta, passed away Tuesday morning, August 25, 2026, under hospice care at Trinity West Hospital in Steubenville. He was 80 years old.
Born in Martins Ferry on April 30, 1946, he was a son of the late Harry and Lena Walton Nulph. Raised in the area, Jim attended Beaver Local High School, where he developed friendships that would last a lifetime. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he honorably served his country aboard the aircraft carrier USS F.D. Roosevelt.
In 1971, Jim moved to South Florida, where he lived for 52 years and worked in construction doing plastering work. He returned to the area in 2024 to live in Calcutta.
Jim was raised in the Methodist faith alongside his mother and went on to become a baptized, born-again Christian. For many years, he brought his family to Calvary Baptist Church in South Florida, where he also served as a Sunday school bus driver, picking up children from all around town. He passionately loved the Lord and wanted all those around him to experience the love and salvation found in Jesus Christ.
He was married for 37 years to Pamela Hager Nulph, and they remained the best of friends until his death. Together, they raised a daughter, Michele Boley.
A loyal friend to those who knew him, Jim was kind-hearted, boisterous, and full of energy. Always sociable, he cherished the company of friends and family. His weekends were occupied with watching the Buckeyes on Saturday and the Steelers on Sunday, with golf enjoyed in between. Above all, he treasured spending quality time with his grandchildren and took every opportunity to be with them.
Cigarettes were never far away from Jim, and although they eventually caused his lungs to fail, his heart always remained strong and full of love for his family and loyal friends.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Michele Boley of North Carolina; his grandson, Trevor Hendry and his wife, Laurie; his grandson, Logan Byrne; and his great-granddaughter, Holly Hendry. He is also survived by his brother, Donald Nulph of Arizona.
Services are private and completed by the Dawson Funeral Home.
