Obituary

Randy D. Seckman, 74

CALCUTTA, OHIO – After a long and difficult fight with cancer, Randy Dean Seckman died peacefully at home on September 28, 2026.

He was born March 24, 1952, to Laverne and Jane Seckman, and lived all of his life in Calcutta. He was graduated from Beaver Local High School and from a South Carolina trade school for heavy equipment operators. He worked at local garages until 1987, when he opened his own repair shop, retiring in 2017.

He loved camping, fishing, and traveling. With his wife, he saw 47 states, plus Manitoba (by accident), Quebec, Ontario, and the maritime provinces. Their favorite spots were Pymatuning State Park, Mackinac Island, and Port St. Joe, Florida. They helicoptered onto a glacier, kayaked in Maine, Alaska, and Hawaii, hiked the rim of the Grand Canyon, and went whitewater rafting in Maine, Alaska, and on the Youghiogheny River in Pennsylvania. They met the winner of the Yukon Quest sled dog race, several border police (again, by accident), a few bush pilots, a couple in Florida they met on a ship in Alaska who have been good friends since, friends they made in campgrounds, and many cruise ship captains and crew.

For 51 years it was adventurous, exciting and sometimes a little dangerous (again, the border police). It wasn't long enough. Good night, sweet prince. Flights of angels see thee too thy rest.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Cathy Hester Seckman; his brother Daryl, nieces Christina Seckman and Andrea Seckman Cross; sister- and brother-in-law Andrea Hesteer Adkins and Larry Adkins; sister-in-law Maggie Hester Kestner; nieces Laran Hyder McGarr and Morgan Kestner Roush; nephews Tim Adkins, Eric Adkins and Zak Kestner; and several great-nieces and -nephews.

A memorial service is to be held Saturday, October 3, at 2 p.m. at Faith Community Church, 50495 Sharon Drive, Calcutta, Ohio 43920.
