Obituary for Charles Edward Burgess

EAST LIVERPOOL - Charles Edward “Chuck” Burgess, of Fredericktown, passed away Friday morning, August 7, 2015, at the St. Mary’s Alzheimer’s Center in Columbiana. He was 80.

Born in East Liverpool, August 31, 1934, he was a son of the late Joseph F. and Ina May Conkle Burgess. A member of the Chester High School Class of 1952, he lived in Chester and following the death of his parents, he resided with his sister Mary and Don Chaney and their family.

He worked at the former Mackintosh Hemphill Company until his retirement after 20 years of service. He also retired from the Stevens Painton Corporation in 1997. He previously worked at the Edwin M. Knowles China Company and Hess Greenhouse.

He was a member of the Fredericktown Christian Church where he had served as an Elder, Deacon, Chairman of the Board of Trustees and sang in the choir. He enjoyed bowling in the church league. He liked to take walks in the woods, swimming in Beaver Creek, feeding the birds and golfing with his friends.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Jean Smith Burgess, at home. The couple married June 1, 1955. He also leaves behind three children, Judith Lawton and her husband, Joseph, of Columbiana, Laura Murdock of Altamonte Springs, Florida, and Charlie T. Burgess and his wife, Carrie, of East Liverpool.

Also left to cherish his memory are his six grandsons, Jason Lawton and his wife, Heather, Jacob Lawton and his wife, Carrie, Joshua Murdock and his wife, Shannon, Andrew Murdock, Thomas Burgess and Alex Burgess, as well as five great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He is also survived by a brother-in-law, James Elliott and a sister-in-law Marjorie Burgess.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Frank, Joseph (Jean), John and James Burgess, and three sisters, Sarah Fife (Karl), Mary Chaney (Don), and Barbara Elliott.

Friends may visit Monday afternoon and evening at the Dawson Funeral Home where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Rev. Norman Eckert will conduct a funeral service Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Columbiana County Memorial Park.

Following the service, family and friends will gather at the Dawson Family Center for fellowship.

The family requests due to allergies that no live flowers be sent! Charles was very proud of his son, five grandsons and two great-grandsons who participate in the Boy Scouts of America.
