Obituary for Carl E. Hoppel

Carl E. Hoppel, 77

WEST POINT – Carl E. Hoppel, of West Point, passed away Saturday morning, April 18, 2020 following a lengthy illness. He was 77.

Born in East Liverpool, March 26, 1943, he was the youngest of five sons to the late H. Everett and Leanore “Lee” Marshall Hoppel. A lifetime area resident, he was a 1962 graduate of Beaver Local High School where he was a member of the wrestling and football teams. Carl won the state wrestling title his freshman, junior and senior years and in 2000 he was honored at the State Wrestling Tournament as one of the top 15 greatest all-time Ohio High School Wrestlers.

He would go on to become a successful businessman in the area for many years. At one time he owned and operated Hoppel Enterprises and Hoppel Brick and Block. He helped co-found several businesses with his friends and family that continue today including West Point Paving, West Point Masonry and West Point Electric. Along with his family, he also developed Hoppel’s Rodeo in West Point where international sanctioned rodeo events are held. Carl supported many community and sporting activities and was a mentor to many young people. Above all things in life, Carl took pride in his family.

He is survived by his wife, Patty Frederick Hoppel, at home. The couple married December 17, 1984. There are four children: Todd Hoppel (Beth) of Hanoverton, Doug Hoppel (Jodi) of Calcutta, Sunny Wright (Joshua) of West Point, and Adam Hoppel (Naomi) of Pittsburgh. There are six grandchildren: Hillary Berger, Harrison Hoppel, Chandler Hoppel, Carsyn Hoppel, Chansyn Hoppel and Wyatt Wright.

He also leaves behind his four brothers, Herman Hoppel, Jim Hoppel, Darryl Hoppel (Jerry) and David Hoppel (Bonnie).

A memorial service will be conducted at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Dawson Funeral Home.

I had the absolute pleasure of meeting him at St. Mary’s and he was without a doubt the coolest guy ever, countless trips to the pop machine for a Coke and some Cookies, and his stories of his wrestling days, he always said “ I was the best “ and lost count of how many matches he won !!!
My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

My condolences to the entire Hoppel family. Carl was one of my favorite customers when I worked at the John Keil Agency. He always had the unlit cigar and a funny story or two to brighten our day. Terry DiRienzo
