The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Norman Mattern can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

"Pap Mattern- By the Numbers"

 

 

This is a tribute given by Summer's husband Eric.

 

 

Three

-Three loving children he leaves behind to carry on

-Three adoring grandchildren

-Three favorite football teams- The Steelers, The Steelers, and is there any other team than the Steelers

-Three is the number of riding lawn mowers I personally saw him wear out

 

Two

-Two sporting loves in his life-Hunting and Fishing

-Two artificial valves in his heart that kept him going way passed when the doctors told him he would

-Two artificail hips that kept him walking

-Two is the number of bluegill he could filet in one minute

-Two ways of doing just about anything- Everytime I thought I knew how to do something, Pap would show me another way

 

One

-One simple, warm smile that always made you feel welcome

-One unwavering devotion to his family

-One wife he loved deeply for so many years

-One lord and savior

 

A few other numbers...

 

Seven

-Seven is the number of great grandchildren whom he adored

 

Sixty One

-The number is yars he was wed to his bride

 

 

And finally the number that is "Too many to Count''

-Too many to count is the number of Mcdonalds bags he hid behind the seat of his truck so Gram wouldn't know

-Too many to count is the number of hours he spent mowing the yard

-Too many to count is the number of dogs that lived happier lives in the dog boxes he built

-Too many to count is the number of birds that found shelter in the birdhouses he made

-Too many to count is the number of elevated garden boxes he built

-Too many to count is the number of times I personally saw him tie up his tomatoes

-Too many to count is the number of strawberries he planted

-Too many to count is the number of strawberries he picked

-Too many to count is the number of fish he caught

-Too many to count is the number of pancakes he made

-Too many to count is the number of cups of coffee we all drank with him at the dining room table

-Too many to count are the number of newspapers he helped print which were by people too many to count

-Too many to count are the unselfish ways he sacrificed for his family

-Too many to count are the memories we have of Pap

-Too many to count are the ways we will miss him

 

The doctors all said his heart was greatly enlarged. They said they had never seen anything like it. Everyone was worried about it. Everyone except Pap.

Now we all know his heart was just as big as it needed to be to hold all the love he had for us and we have for him.
