Obituary

PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - Robert T. “Bob” Hay passed at 3:09 pm, Monday, November 18, 2019 at Allegheny General Hospital following a sudden illness. He was 81.

Born in East Liverpool on November 17, 1938, he was a son of the late Robert Carl and Della Ruth (Talbot) Hay. A lifetime area resident, he was a member of the East Liverpool High School Class of 1956. Bob went on to Ohio University where he earned a degree in horticulture. While at Ohio University he became a member of the Acacia Fraternity and taught drivers education.

On June 28, 1969 he married the love of his life, Kathy Williams Hay. They enjoyed many years together until her death on April 16, 1991.

Early on he helped his dad with the family business, Hay’s Greenhouse and also worked at Hess Greenhouse.

Bob worked at Riverview Florist from 1969 -1991 where he was the head grower in the greenhouse and assisted in many areas of the operation. On April 16, 1991 he was hired for lawn and garden at the Calcutta Wal-Mart where he used his experience to tend to the plants and flowers until his retirement this past December. Bob also worked from time to time for Bob & Robins Flowers and thought the world of Bob and Robin Bosco. He had a deep love for all plants, a green thumb like no other and there wasn’t anything he couldn’t grow. Although he had great knowledge and experience, his true gift was his love of people along with his ability to be kind and generous to everyone he met.

Bob was always thinking of others and loved his community. He was a member of the Calcutta Lions Club since 1983, serving as a director on the board. He also played Santa at Wal-Mart for many years.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by a niece Barbara Sue Hay.

Left to cherish his memory is his only child, who was his world, Susan Nicole “Nikki” (Hay) Ludwig and her husband, Matt whom he loved deeply and thought of him as the son he never had. Also surviving are his only brother, best friend and running around buddy Donald R. Hay and his wife Janet and his grandchildren that he absolutely adored and loved, Matthew and Rachel Ludwig. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

“Words cannot express how much I loved my dad and how much he loved me back. To him, I was perfect and could do no wrong. To me, he walked on water and was my hero. My life now has a huge void that will make it hard to go on, but for him, I must. Thank you for teaching me about graciousness, character and integrity. I will do my best to make you proud and carry on your memory. I love you and I will always be your little girl”.

Friends may visit Friday at the Dawson Funeral Home where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Bob’s friend, Elder Tom Enochs will conduct a funeral service Saturday at 12 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery.

Following the service, friends and family will gather at the Longs Run Trinity Presbyterian Church for fellowship.

A special thank you to the doctors and nurses at Allegheny General Hospital who did their best and took great care of my dad.

“A great man is one who leaves others at a loss after he is gone.” – Paul Valery

I'm so sad to hear of Bob's passing. He really was one of the best people I've ever known. He and Kathy were such good friends with my husband and me, we shared many, many good times. Great memories.

I was lucky enough to work alongside Bob at Walmart during my time in Lawn and Garden. He was the kindest soul I’ve yet to meet. He knew no strangers. I learned so many valuable lessons from him, how lucky for me! His memory will live on forever, he will never be forgotten. My prayers are with the family during this painful time. Heaven is surely more beautiful now that he is reunited with love once again as well as putting his green thumb to work. Rest peacefully Bob.

I remember him from his years at Riverview Florist. He was a good friend to my neighbor Millie who also worked there. May his memories carry you thru this difficult time and foster your healing.
