I never moved back home after college so most of my memories are from childhood but still very vivid. I hope that my grandchildren will remember our times together with such fondness and warmth. I remember . . . Having sleepover parties, sometimes with my cousin Deb. We would wear Nana’s robes over Popup’s T-shirts and pretend to be princesses. I especially loved going down the basement steps with Nana’s robe “flowing” behind me while on a mission to select the soda for an ice cream float . . . there was always a flat of soda’s already chilled from sitting on the floor in the basement, grape, orange, rootbeer. Rootbeer was my favorite. And I remember that Pop-pop would sit close to the TV so he could turn down the volume during the commercials! Other snippets from that time:
Baking cookies and Nana sending me to wash my hands repeatedly because I kept pushing my hair out of my face (she always wanted to cut my bangs); I think I washed more than I baked. Playing with a large tin of buttons—a true treasure for a little girl, so many shapes, sizes, colors and textures and also making troll doll clothes from those buttons and Nana’s scrap fabric and felt. Picking wild berries and eating them with cream and sugar out of small crystal apple-shaped bowls AND warm baked apples with cinnamon and milk. No one made sweet iced tea for picnics like Nana’s, so perfectly done with lemons and oranges. Playing croquet in the yard. Cleaning out the fish-shaped fish bowl and gently taking out the gold fish. Nana’s crafts . . . always something new, frogs made of Vellux blankets, miniature flowers made from ?glue and flour and food coloring and how her fingerprints would be captured in the petals when they dried. I loved how she always matched her accessories, matching shoes, belts, purses and jewelry. The way she would always start her conversation with you by telling you all that she had done recently, always a very long list, and the way she would say, “Oh my garsh.”
Thank you Nana for the love, the memories and the inspiration to live life to the fullest!
